Checking In on Your Seasonal Mood

10/14/2025

The mornings feel crisper, and the evenings arrive a little sooner. Fall has officially arrived, bringing changes not only in the weather but also in our mood, energy, and motivation.

For some, this shift is cozy and welcome, but for others, it can trigger early signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which may include low energy, increased sleep, changes in appetite, or persistent feelings of sadness.

The good news is that you don't need to wait until these feelings become overwhelming to take action. By recognizing changes early, you can start caring for your mental health before the season feels too heavy.
One simple way to check in with yourself is to use the free and confidential screening tool from Mental Health America. It’s quick and easy, helping you gain a better understanding of what you’re experiencing, whether it’s mild seasonal blues or something that may benefit from additional support.
Take a moment for yourself today by visiting mhascreening.org.

Please remember that a screening is not a diagnosis; it's just a first step toward support. Regardless of the results, you deserve to feel better, and there are people and resources available to help you get there.

Resource Spotlight: Back-to-School Mental Health Checklist
As the first day of school approaches, many parents are busy checking off supply lists, organizing schedules, and planning transportation. However, an important area that is often overlooked is mental and emotional readiness.

Returning to school can be an exciting time, but it can also create anxiety, especially after the unstructured days of summer. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or facing the challenges of middle or high school, these transitions can be significant emotional shifts for both kids and caregivers.

That's why we are highlighting a helpful Back-to-School Mental Health Checklist created by On Our Sleeves and Crisis Text Line. This free and easy-to-use resource provides practical tools to help you and your child approach the new school year with confidence and emotional support.

📝 What’s Included:
  • Conversation starters to open up space for honest, age-appropriate discussions about school worries or excitement
  • Morning routine ideas that bring calm and consistency to your daily rhythm
  • Emotional check-in tools to help your child recognize and express how they’re feeling

These straightforward strategies can help lessen back-to-school stress, foster resilience, and strengthen the bond between you and your child. A Simple Self-Care Strategy for Summer

6/19/2025

As the weather warms and the days grow longer, summer presents a perfect opportunity to reset and reconnect with nature, loved ones, and most importantly, yourself.
While “self-care” can sometimes feel like a buzzword, it doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. One of the simplest and most effective forms of self-care is also one of the most accessible: spending intentional time outdoors.

Why Nature Matters for Mental Health
Just 20 minutes in a green space can lower stress hormones, improve mood, and sharpen mental clarity. Whether walking along a tree-lined path, sitting quietly by the water, or enjoying a sunset with family, nature offers moments of calm that our minds and bodies need.

Try This Grounding Exercise While Outdoors:

Notice:
  • 5 things you can see
  • 4 things you can hear
  • 3 things you can feel
  • 2 things you can smell
  • 1 thing you can taste
This mindfulness technique can help reduce anxiety and bring your focus back to the present moment.

Don’t Forget the Basics

Sometimes the most powerful self-care strategies are the simplest:
  • Hydrate regularly to support mental clarity and mood.
  • Eat nutrient-rich foods that stabilize energy and emotions.
  • Take intentional breaks, even short ones, to recharge and refocus.

Self-care isn’t a luxury; it's a necessity. By taking small, meaningful steps to care for yourself, you’re building a more resilient, balanced foundation for whatever life brings.
This summer, make space for joy, stillness, and connection. Nature and your well-being are closer than you think.
