Kids First Inc of Elizabeth City

At Harbor Counseling, we believe that strong communities are built when families have access to supportive and compassionate resources. This month, we are highlighting Kids First Inc. of Elizabeth City, a Child Advocacy Center dedicated to helping children and families navigate some of life’s most challenging situations.

Kids First serves children throughout northeastern North Carolina who have experienced abuse or neglect. Their goal is to reduce trauma and provide a safe, child-focused environment where children can share their experiences and begin the healing process.

Through a coordinated team approach, Kids First offers services such as forensic interviews, advocacy, therapy referrals, and support for non-offending caregivers. Their efforts help ensure that children feel heard, protected, and supported while guiding families toward the resources they need.

Organizations like Kids First play an essential role in protecting children and supporting families in our community. We are grateful for the work they do every day to provide safety, care, and hope.

January is all about fresh starts, and sometimes the best fresh start is having a few simple tools that help you get organized, reflect, and check in with yourself. One of our favorite places to find gentle, easy-to-use supports is Mental Health America’s Self-Help Tools library.

This free online collection includes:
  • Printable goal-setting worksheets
  • Daily and weekly mood trackers
  • Reflection prompts and journaling pages
  • Planning tools for building healthier routines
  • Guides for managing stress, anxiety, and motivation

These tools are great for anyone who wants to enter the year with more clarity and compassion. You can use them to create realistic mental-health goals, track how you’re feeling throughout the week, or reflect on how you want to show up in the new year.

They’re especially helpful for those who want structure without pressure; think of them as a calm, supportive nudge rather than a strict checklist.
Whether you’re aiming for more balance, more rest, or more emotional awareness this year, these resources can help you build habits that actually stick. January is a perfect time to explore them and find what supports you best.

Preparing Your Mind (and Goals) for the New Year Ahead

12/17/2025

The end of the year naturally invites reflection. We look back at what we’ve learned, where we’ve grown, and where we still want to go. But instead of rushing into resolutions that fade by February, what if we approached goal-setting with a little more intention and self-compassion?
That’s where S.M.A.R.T. goals come in,  a simple, structured way to turn hopes into actionable steps.
S.M.A.R.T. stands for:
  • Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve.
  • Measurable: Find a way to track your progress.
  • Achievable: Make sure it’s realistic and within reach.
  • Relevant: Choose goals that truly matter to you.
  • Time-bound: Set a timeline to stay accountable.

When goals are clear and meaningful, they become less about pressure and more about growth.
As you prepare for the New Year, take a quiet moment to reflect on the past twelve months. What worked well for your mental and emotional health? What habits or routines helped you feel balanced? Let those insights guide your goals for what’s next.
This S.M.A.R.T. Goal Worksheet is designed to help you map out those next steps with clarity and care. You can download it directly from our website and use it as a guide to set goals that support your mental well-being, not overwhelm it.
Here’s to a year of progress, purpose, and peace, one S.M.A.R.T. step at a time.

Resource Spotlight: Mindfulness Activity Card

11/11/2025

Sometimes, taking a moment to slow down begins with a single mindful breath. The Mindfulness Activity Card is a simple, heart-centered tool designed to help both kids and adults pause, connect, and reset. With easy prompts that encourage you to notice what you can see, hear, feel, taste, and smell, or to place your hand on your belly to feel each breath, this activity fosters gentle awareness of the present moment.

These brief exercises are ideal for use in classrooms, counseling sessions, or as a family activity at home. They build emotional awareness, reduce stress, and help develop grounding skills that support overall well-being.

✨ Give it a try: Take one minute to close your eyes and think about the happiest day of your life. Allow yourself to feel every detail: sounds, smells, and smiles, and notice how your body relaxes.
Mindfulness doesn't have to be complicated; it simply begins with paying attention to the present moment.

Checking In on Your Seasonal Mood

10/14/2025

The mornings feel crisper, and the evenings arrive a little sooner. Fall has officially arrived, bringing changes not only in the weather but also in our mood, energy, and motivation.

For some, this shift is cozy and welcome, but for others, it can trigger early signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which may include low energy, increased sleep, changes in appetite, or persistent feelings of sadness.

The good news is that you don't need to wait until these feelings become overwhelming to take action. By recognizing changes early, you can start caring for your mental health before the season feels too heavy.
One simple way to check in with yourself is to use the free and confidential screening tool from Mental Health America. It’s quick and easy, helping you gain a better understanding of what you’re experiencing, whether it’s mild seasonal blues or something that may benefit from additional support.
Take a moment for yourself today by visiting mhascreening.org.

Please remember that a screening is not a diagnosis; it's just a first step toward support. Regardless of the results, you deserve to feel better, and there are people and resources available to help you get there.
